This reminds me of high school, dirt roads and singing at the top of my lungs. I had this double album set. My buddy Fimnora Westcaw is writing about long songs. This is the longest I know and remember that it always felt too short back then. It made me smile to remember and see what everybody else is posting.

Yes, Free Bird is still great. I remember when those boys first went to Muscle Shoals. Two other “long songs” from that era are Don McClean’s “American Pie” and “Susie Q” by Creedence Clearwater.
Janis Joplin did a long version of “Bobbie McGee” as well but it wasn’t quite so long as the others. Many of the more popular groups would “stretch-out a tune” when they wanted to show case the band members or simply to change tempo.
All of those songs are a part of my childhood. Hippies and Apollo and Vietnam and Nixon and wondering why my father argued with Cronkite and sensing the paranoia which called for personal bomb shelters. But also woods and fields and bayous and fish and dirt roads and swimming in creeks. Those songs remind me of the taste of those times. I enjoyed that you stopped by here. Thank you.

I agree, it’s always too short. And I have a rule, Skynyrd can never be stopped in the middle of a song… If I’m out in the car just getting in from somewhere, if Skynyrd is on the radio, I’m in that car till the echo of that last chord fades! And I got a smile a mile wide right now!
