Vincent

Standard

I think this is my all time forever favorite song.  I’ve loved it since I was a boy.  I did not understand then.  It just moved me somehow.  I think I am beginning to understand now.  Not something to do in your spare time.   It is so rich and layered with meaning.  Don’t ever wish to be an artist or you may learn why Vincent cut his ear off.  Don McLean was a Bard.  Beautiful were his words. There was truth is his music.  Be Groovy.

Listen to this.  Empty Chairs

Crossroads

Babylon

And of course American Pie

  1. My mom was an artist and LOVED Van Gogh. She also loved this song. My sisters and I would sing this with my mom and dad with the radio. Soon we memorized the words and sang it all the time. My parents have passed, but we girls still sing it. Thanks for the memory.

  2. I remember hearing “Starry, Starry Night” as a child. I have a slight remembrance f it being associated with Vincent van Gogh. The painting associated with the song is my favorite. I thought that the music accompanying the slide show of paintings was very beautiful. I could imagine the suffering that van Gogh experienced. No one understood mental illness in his time. Many still do not understand today. Thank you for the post and bringing awareness.

    • I’m so glad to read your comment on here this morning, La Shea. I was watching the video last night about 1 a.m. and the mental illness connection (which I was only distantly aware of with Van Gogh) blew right past me. Going to listen to it again in the full light of day!

      • Its where the art comes from. What we call mental illness is thought of as messages from the spirit world in others. Its viewed as an opportunity. I will be ok. Just got to walk it all, every step. Drink every drop. I tell my artistic children that they will always find god around the crazy in them in their creativity. Order beauty complexity out of chaos gods art.

  3. I love “Starry, Starry Night.” The painting AND the song. My favorite Van Gogh is “The Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum, Arles, at Night.” I was just trying to put up an art gallery on my blog when you put this up.

I’ve never heard “Empty Chair.” That’s a very sad song. Makes a person feel kind of vulnerable. Especially when they’ve worn the One Ring and have been stretched impossibly thin.
